About Greek Costumes

Greek costumes are simple and need little sewing. All they need are actually a rectangular piece of cloth, that can be folded easily and put away after use.

The main item worn for both women and men was the chiton, which is the tunic. This was draped over the body such that it covered the left arm and the right arm is left bare. It was worn with a belt.

The length of the chiton depended on the status quo of the wearer, reaching up to the ankle or the knee. They could fasten it with brooches (fibulae) or pins on the left or even both shoulders. These garments could be embroidered, dyed or have decorative items at the edges.

The four main Ancient Greek costume types are Cretan Minoan, Mycenaean, Archaic, and Classical, named after the era in which they came about.

The Cretan Minoan garments were very like modern ones. Skirts and blouses were made to the wearer’s body shape. Women wore corsets and flounced skirts stretched over hoops.

The Minoan style resembles that of the late 19th century Europe, with slender waist, accentuated breast, and sweeping skirts.

The Minoan style influenced the Mycenaean clothes, but these were still quite primitive.

Archaic Greek garments were primarily the tunic and shawl. During the Classical era, fabrics were softer and the draping more sophisticated such that clothes fell naturally over the body. Clothing was worn in so subtly so that it was difficult to differentiate between the body and the cloth.
